Pearl of Wisdom

'The Abbasids visited Salih. b. Wasif, and Salih. b. 'Ali and a few other deviated people from this location also visited Salih. b. Wasif when Abu Muhammad (AS) [Imam al-'Askari] was in the prison. He said to him, 'Put him in strict confinement and give him no ease.' Salih. replied, 'What more can I do with him when I have assigned two of the most evil men I could find to guard him, and surprisingly those two have turned to worship and prayers [as a result of the Imam]!'

Question : #670 Category: Marriage - Nikkah
Subject: engagement
Question: salam

my question regarding engagement is that what are the rules and producers of engagement? as far as i know the boy and his parents go over the girls house and propose and if the girl agrees then that's it they are still non mahramm to each other but a promise to get married which no other guy can propose to her again until that promise is broken. and is it just a promise or is there some sort of a ritual involved in it. for example sunnis do the faitha and i have heard this once that shia do sigha(muta) for their engagement and once the period is over they get married. any hadis or from the quran on that well help thank you
Answer: Alaykum Salaam,

Our Holy Prophet said, 'publicize the marriage, but conceal the engagement' [Ibid no. 44532]

When a brother has an intention to marry a believing sister, he may communicate with her with the constant niyat of getting to know her, with the permission of the female's fathers knowledge.

It's recommended Muta'/Sigha is pronounced with the conditions to ensure chastity and modesty is in place, and openness to communicate more freely without the potential to enter sin.
