Question : #595 Category: Miscellaneous
Subject: tobacco consumption
Question: Hi,

I have recently started using tobacco in different forms such as snuff and smoking it.

I have read that drugs that affect the state of mind are not allowed. Is tobacco allowed? when i smoke it, i do gain affects such as relaxation and stimulation.
Answer: If smoking causes substantial harm to a male or female smoker or to the foetus, then it is prohibited, whether he/she is a beginner or is addicted, assuming that he/she would not suffer substantial harm by quitting.

As for the one who would suffer harm by quitting, he/she should consider which one is less harmful: to continue smoking or to quit, and act accordingly.

Question:
Hi,

Sorry, I did not understand your answer as it was too open ended.

Given smoking is proven to have substantial harmful affects, and `alters your mind` as it acts as a relaxation / stimulant tool, is it allowable to consume tobacco products?

The only reason I ask is because I do not want to continue using tobacco products IF it is not allowed under false pretensions.

Could you please provide a more clear answer?

Bismihi Ta'ala,

If smoking leads to considerable harmful effect on the body of the individual, one would neither be allowed to smoke it nor to buy it for this purpose.
