speaking to Muhammad al-Khazzaz, said, 'Do you not go to the market? Do you not see the fruit that is sold, and the things that you desire?' al-Khazzaz said, 'Yes.' He (AS) said, 'For everything you see but you cannot [afford to] buy, you receive the reward of a good deed.'

Question : #415 Category: Miscellaneous
Subject: Buying on Ashura
Question: Salamu alaykum,

In regards to Ashura, is it prohibited to purchase anything new? If so, what do we define as "new" (i.e. necessary vs. luxury). Also, can you please point out the source/reference to where this issue can be supported. Much thanks.
Answer: It is Makruh or undesirable, and the 'purchased' item shall not be blessed on that day.

New may refer to a good or service that was purchased.
